bullet  General Notes:

General Notes: Tombstone says he was born near Elizabethtown NJ. "He possessed strong poetical qualifications. "

A soldier in the war of the Revolution, and a Federalist in politics. He preached Presbyterianism, Methodism and Quakerism, but finally became a Freethinker and preached his own new doctrine until he died at the age of ninety-two years. From p. 970 of Beers, J.H. and co., Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, Pennsylvania, 1893.

His Rev War pension is available from the Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Pensions, or Office of Adjutant General at Trenton NJ. It says he was born Nov 1755 in Morris County, then moved with father's family to Greene County PA whence he enlisted. Referred to as "Reverend Lot Leonard" He and his wife settled near her father, where he patented a tract of land on the Tenmile at the site of Homeville. He also bought the tract of land which Ezekiel Morris had patented to him. While living near Homeville in 1782, Lot served in Capt. James Archer's Militia Company.

Lot was a very large man, being about six feet seven inches in height. He was raised a Presbyterian, but in later life reformed to the Universal Salvation. Lot assisted all his children in acquiring homes and land during his lifetime. This accounts for his peculiar will in which he left only twenty-five cents to each of his surviving children and the remainder of his estate to his second wife Frances.

Served in Morris Co., N.J. militia 1775-1776; served 1778 as a captain of Indian Spies and rangers with headquarters at Jarret's Fort, Greene Co., Pa. Private in Captain James Archer's Company, 4th class. He was born in Mendham Township, son of William; married 1) Elizabeth Hoge 2) Frances Willis; died in Greene Co., Pa. Pension N.J. Frances R6291 D.A.R. 118394

"At the age of about 21 years [this would have been about 1769 - however, that does not lie well with his dates in the NJ militia] Lot Leonard, having married Elizabeth Hoge ... moved to these parts and took up a tomahawk improvement, the tract of land known as the Caldwell Houlsworth property, on which the Houlsworth mill now stands, including the Still Smith farm and other adjoining lands."

Lot in 1778 served as captain of Indian spies and rangers with headquarters at Jarretts Fort, Greene County. He applied for pension, 1835, and his claim was allowed. He was born in Morris County, N. J.; died in Greene County, Pa.

Lot Leonard bought 160 acres of land in Morrow County from GLO in 1822. Lands adjacent to Isaac and Zenas Leonard (purchased in the next few years)

Died at the home of Robert Willis in East Bethlehem Township. Buried in the Old Leonard Burial Ground on the tract he patented from the State of Pennsylvania. His will, 1847, Washington County Book 6 page 543.
