Obituary: Helen Orb Dawes, 94, sculptor, painter and World War I veteran, died Friday in Evanston Hospital. She had resided at the Presbyterian Home, Evanston. Mrs. Dawes, formerly of Winnetka, was the widow of Neil B. Dawes, retired vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. As an artist, she specialized in portraits, garden statues and allegorical figures. A native of Chicago, Mrs. Dawes was born at home at 29th and Michigan. Her father, John A. Orb, was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. Mrs. Dawes attended Dana Hall, Wellesley, Mass., and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York City and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Mrs. Dawes, who was fluent in French, German and English, enlisted during WWI as a private in the U. S. Army Signal Corps. She was one of some 200 women who served with the American Expeditionary Force as telephone operators and interpreters. She was stationed in Paris and Tours, France. When the war ended she was posted to Germany. During WWII, Mrs. Dawes was a member of the Red Cross Gray Ladies and used her skills as a sculptress to create artificial limbs for wounded military personnel. She had been a member of the Indian Hill Club, the Arts Club of Chicago, the Woman's Athletic Club, the Wausaukee Club and the Art Institute of Chicago. Survivors include her daughter, Katnarine Dawes-Rutherford, a Chicago Sun-Times reporter writing under the bylines Kay Rutherford and K. O. Dawes; a son, William N.; three nephews, John A. Orb III, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Smith Barney-Harris Upham, Dawes Walter and Jack Canfield; four grandchildren, and two gtreat grandchildren. Private memorial services are pending.
Helen married Neil Booker DAWES, son of William Ruggles DAWES and Margaret BOOKER. (Neil Booker DAWES was born on 7 Jan 1894 in Nebraska and died in Nov 1966 in Winnetka, Cook, Illinois.)
